5 February 2016 Zika virus - What is the risk to South Africa?

Excerpt from an article published on the National Institute for Communicable Diseases website

It is important to emphasize that Zika virus has not to date been found further south than Uganda in Africa. The vector species, Aedes aegypti is common in South Africa, particularly in the eastern coastal plain but also in the cities of the inland plateau. In the urban centres, the mosquito breeds in small collections of water such as discarded tyres and buckets, or the leaf axils of Strelitzia nicolae (“banana trees”). Aedes aegypti is made up of 2 subspecies, only one of which occurs predominantly outside of Africa.

The typical African subspecies, tends not to bite humans and may well be less susceptible to Zika virus when compared to the South American ones.

Even though the possibility of an infected traveller introducing Zika virus to South Africa obviously does exist, the short viraemic period (virus present in blood) would lessen the chance of being transferred to a susceptible mosquito, particularly because local Aedes aegypti mosquitoes have very limited flight ranges (measured in a few metres) and tend not to enter buildings (unlike subspecies aegypti, which utilizes homes in crowded urban settlements).

22 July 2014 UCT Competency Framework

UCT has agreed a UCT Competency Framework which sets out the types of behaviours one would expect to see in successful performance in different types and levels of jobs. The UCT Competency Framework provides a comprehensive list of competencies for all Academic and PASS jobs at UCT, and descriptions of how these competencies look at different levels of jobs. The Framework is used when we:
  • Design jobs and structure
  • Write job descriptions
  • Manage and develop performance of staff
  • Recruit and select staff
  • Train and develop staff
  • Identify and plan career paths
  • Plan for successors for key jobs
  • Develop our organisational culture
Note: These descriptors are not rigid and absolute performance measures, but rather generic guidelines for what effective performance looks like. They are a starting point for a conversation around expected levels of performance. The competency framework is neither all-inclusive nor prescriptive.

8 August 2013 New Client Services unit

The HR Operations section has undergone a number of changes over the last year in order to align with the HR Departments new client-centred service model adopted in late 2011.

The changes have resulted in the formation of four Client Services hubs: Upper campus hub, Faculty of Humanities hub, Lower campus hub and Faculty of Health Sciences hub. Each hub consists of a team of HR Administrators and HR Practitioners/Senior HR Practitioners (previously known as HR Advisors/Senior HR Advisors) who report to an HR Client Services Manager and who are supported administratively by an HR Assistant.
